St. Paul’s Episcopal Nursery School
participates in the United Way Donor Option Plan. In the past,
the Nursery School has received many generous donations from this
plan as a non-profit human service agency. These donations are
used to help fund our financial assistance program (see Section F,
V.).
If you wish to choose the Nursery
School to receive part of your annual United Way donation, the
designated code name is St. Paul’s Episcopal Sc, and the code number
is 2774. These designations are important to be included on
your pledge form to ensure that St. Paul’s Episcopal Nursery School
receives your contribution.
If you have any questions or would
like a pledge form, please call the school to speak with the
Director or the Office Manager. We thank you for your
continuing support.

When extreme weather conditions
exist, the Director decides about postponing or canceling school for
the day. The teachers are notified, and they in turn contact
the Homeroom Parent(s) who will put the phone chain into effect for
each class. Morning cancellations also will be announced on
the television and radio stations WTAE
1250 and
KDKA 1020 and on the local cable
station. Afternoon cancellations will be announced by the
telephone chain.
Whether the Nursery School is
closed or not, please use your common sense. If you are not
comfortable driving on the roads, do not take the chance.

Every effort is made to insure that
your child’s experience at St. Paul’s is a positive one.
Realizing that any transition can be difficult for both parent and
child, home visits by the child’s teacher are planned in the weeks
before the beginning of school. The child and teacher meet on
ground familiar to the child, and the parent(s) show their approval
of the teacher by welcoming her/him into the home.

Celebrating Your Child’s Birthday at School
St. Paul's Nursery
School wants to ensure that each child’s birthday is celebrated with
his/her school friends and that a memorable day is created. In lieu
of food treats or party favors for the children, Mom or Dad are
encouraged to come into the classroom to read your child’s favorite
story. This way, you personally can share in your child’s special
day.
Additionally, your
child will be presented with a birthday crown to wear during school
and will be able to choose the snack for the day. Children love to
be “in charge”—and choosing their own treat (such as popsicles,
fruit roll-ups, pretzels, or nut-free cookies) can be a wonderful
birthday delight. If you wish, you may supply the paper goods (cups,
plates, and napkins) for the class celebration.
If you child has a
birthday that occurs during a summer month, you can consider
celebrating your child’s Half-Birthday, which is the child’s
birthday…6 months in advance. (For example, a July 15th birthday
could be celebrated on January 15th.) It never hurts to have an
extra birthday party—if this is something you and your child want to
happen!
Invitations to OUtside Birthday Parties
Please do not send
invitations to your child’s birthday party to Nursery School for
distribution unless every child in the class is to receive one.
Please remember that children’s feelings easily are hurt.
Holidays are
celebrated in the classroom, and each teacher determines which
holidays are appropriate to celebrate and the date of the
celebration. Parents usually help with the preparations by
volunteering to bring paper supplies (cups, plates, and napkins) and
drinks (one or two containers of juice or milk).

halloween
There is not an
overarching school policy in regard to Halloween. Please trust the
teacher's judgment about what is appropriate for the individual
class. Most of the teachers, especially for the younger students, do
not want the children to wear costumes from home. Many preschoolers
simply are not comfortable dressing up in a costume, particularly
without their parent(s) present, and are frightened to see other
children in costumes.
Many of the classes
have non-threatening costumes in the dress-up area for children to
try on during the days leading up to Halloween. Yet, when the time
comes to actually wear a Halloween costume, many young children
become frightened or overly excited. Again, please turn to your
child’s teacher for guidance, and, as always, absolutely no masks or
face make-up is allowed in the Nursery School.
christmas/holiday
gifts
Christmas is a time
for giving, and you and your child may wish to give your child’s
teacher a gift. Please know that there is no expectation on the
teacher’s part for elaborate holiday gifts. You are encouraged to
keep the gift small and simple—something made with the child is
always appropriate. Please be sure to check with your Homeroom
Parent because sometimes he/she will coordinate a holiday gift from
the entire class.
valentine’s
day
Please check with
your child’s teacher before planning valentines. In any event, do
not put the name of the recipient on the outside of the envelope.
Simply include the correct number of cards for everyone in your
child’s class. Names on envelopes add confusion to a hectic day and
make it very difficult for the teacher. Additionally, please do not
include any candy with the valentine.
